The Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) fishery in Australia is amongst the most sustainable tuna fisheries in the world. In fact, the Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery is certified sustainably managed. In October 2010 the Australian Minister for Environment listed the Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery as Conservation Dependent. This title is given to species that have been over-fished but are now sustainably managed. Early in September 2014, the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) confirmed that the latest data indicated strong recovery of the wild population of SBT.

By September 2017, the CCSBT, working with the CSIRO Fisheries Scientific Committee, reviewed and re-confirmed the latest data, which indicated that Southern Bluefin Tuna is a sustainable fishery, with stocks growing yearly.
